Joan Jonas Exhibition

As i’m trying to getting a further understanding into the world of performance art I thought that visiting the Joan Jonas exhibition would be a good way to do that. Upon learning about her work, I was immediately interested in her use of masks as the idea of a mask is something that has driven my work – how can you disguise/alter/distort a person visually, how will it change the narrative? And i’m currently finding that datamoshing is my way of doing that.

This particularly mask and piece I aesthetically really enjoyed. There is at at once an eerie, darkly funny, subversive quality and what you can’t see here is that there was some sort of a mesh so you could actually her lips move. Quite freaky!

I’d like to in the future go back to my mannequins and see if I can incorporate them into my datamoshing technique.
